New coating increases cylinder life 8 times

Corrosive conditions in complex industrial and outdoor environments, particularly in water market applications, greatly reduce the life of operating parts such as cylinders and actuators.

Advanced cylinder coating resists corrosion

Parker Hannifin Corporation has developed an advanced coating for cylinders and rods called Global ShieldTM with up to eight times the corrosion resistance of conventional coatings. Global Shield showed better performance than standard coatings such as chrome plating, nitride, nickel plating by reduction, and chrome plating over nickel plating by reduction when tested for corrosive properties with salt spray, calcium chloride mist, and magnesium chloride mist.

Global Shield Technology

Global Shield was developed as a direct response to customer requests for a corrosion-resistant and environmentally responsible coating that significantly reduces downtime associated with cylinder repair and seal replacement. The Global Shield coating has a submicron-sized structure that eliminates surface microfractures and delamination, especially when bending occurs.

Extensive field and laboratory tests verified the coating’s performance against corrosion and dynamic wear. Cylinders protected with Global Shield have demonstrated up to eight times greater corrosion resistance than conventional coatings. Tests also confirmed leak-proof performance even after 1 million cycles and 2,000 hours of salt spray. When compared with chrome plating and tested with the Rockwell “C” indentation test protocol, Global Shield shows outstanding interfacial adhesion and impact resistance, with almost no micro-fractures, fragmentation, flaking or delamination.

Compared with traditional stem coatings, Global Shield provides the following advantages:

  • Significantly improved corrosion resistance as a result of compact submicron monolayer structure and absence of microcracks
  • Less friction
  • Ductility and strength: coating bends with the stem
  • Engineered hardness (HRC 54 minimum) to provide wear resistance

As a result, fewer cylinder repairs and seal replacements (and thus reduced downtime) provide longer life in corrosive environments. This results in lower maintenance costs because the connecting rod does not have to be replaced due to corrosion.

Another advantage of Global Shield is that it is environmentally friendly. The coating or manufacturing process does not require the use of chromium; this eliminates hexavalent, hazardous waste stream risks and PEL (personal exposure limits) issues and makes it compliant with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU concerning recyclable coating materials.

Global Shield can be easily applied during the manufacture of Parker cylinders or installed during after-sales cylinder maintenance through a process that is both efficient and environmentally responsible. Global Shield is an option available for Parker cylinders of almost any size.

Various application possibilities

The ability of Global Shield stem coating technology to resist corrosion from salt spray, calcium chloride mist, magnesium chloride mist and other environmental conditions makes it ideal for tough industrial applications. It is particularly suitable for water-oriented applications such as hydroelectric and marine or intermodal operations. Other industrial applications include mining, construction, materials management, renewable energy, power generation, waste, Oil & Gas, military, heavy transportation, forestry, and other industrial and mobile environments.

Compared with chrome, chrome-on-nickel, or other multiprocess/multilayer stem plating technologies, Global Shield will improve cylinder performance with reduced initial and long-term ownership costs. In addition, it can be an economical alternative to corrosion-resistant steel when applied on carbon steel.
